It’s been said to me many times “Afro-Punk changed my life” . For me, this is a dream come true. I remember being a kid a hearing bands like Black Flag, scream the lyrics ” I don’t care” or the Decendants sass, ” I dont wanna grow up”. As a 13 year old, it was simple statements like this that helped me define myself. I’m touched to know that my little film has helped so many define themselves.

It does make sense though, Afro-Punk has the simplest message. “It’s okay” We people of color don’t hear it enough. In a world where we are not seen as the norm, being told it’s okay to be who you are, if refreshing if not completely validating.

Afro-Punk has changed my life too. Thanks.

The Documentary Afropunk was completed in 2003, and continues to screen around the world.
