James Spooner describes himself simply, “I do tattoos, rides bikes and loves my family, not in that order” but his accomplishments prove his modesty. Spooner is probably best known from his freshman work AFRO-PUNK, which quickly has gained cult status. Few filmmakers can claim there work inspired a movement, but he certainly can. Thousands of black youth fly the Afro-Punk banner as an identifier. The movement has grown so far beyond Spooner, that new “Afro-Punks” are still lining up to see the film now 6 years after it’s American theatrical release.
It was later release in Japan, debuting at the infamous, Fuji Rock festival. One of only 3 films featured that year.
After Premiering his second film, this time a narrative, White Lies Black Sheep at the Toronto Film festival he had to save his American premiere for his own Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn NY now in its 5th year. Presented by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, with sponsorship from Toyota and Pepsi, an estimated 20,000 people, young and old, rocked out for 10 days, having the unique experience of live music, rare and obscure black film and a custom built skate park to kick/pushed in.
James Spooner has since moved to Los Angeles to bring his world view to the West coast. He has founded the Black kids on bikes a loose knit group of black bicycle riders. Once a month they host the Freedom Rides, an organized bicycle ride for the black community.
